The round-for-round at the pool, hoping the next double takes the edge off, I watched that from behind the bar for years before I really got it. Half the people ordering weren't there for the drink so much as for permission to talk to each other. Saying hello first with a soda water is harder than any of that, so fair play to you.

Glad to hear I’m not alone in at least seeing that dynamic. I love the idea that people just want to connect and alcohol is the socially acceptable way to try to do that. Definitely tougher with a soda water, but it gets easier the more reps I get.
