Whatever path you take to sobriety, make sure it moves in a positive direction, and never travel alone. Sobriety is a lot about finding your tribe, where people celebrate, support, and love each other as they work together to become more authentic versions of themselves.

Removing the chemicals is the first step. Replacing them with a life of connection and meaning is the rest of the journey, and where the magic is.

Hey dr Dana,

This really helped me, big time:

"You're preparing yourself for that day, where you finally decide that you know, I just don't want this. Or need this. I just don't need this in my life anymore and I want to try something new."

Drifter is an old buddy of mine on the "I Am Sober" aka IAS app. Those words had a profound effect on me, back then and even now still...

Sincerely,

For me, I had to come to terms with and realization of what it was I was running from or hiding from or why I was self-medicating to eliminate the pain. Some people have a metabolic dependency on alcohol and my understanding is only true in house rehabilitation can break the cycle of alcohol dependence, but for most of us that uses (abuses)alcohol we have to figure out why is we drink make peace with that and then grasp the understanding of how much better life is without alcohol. My way worked for me, but everyone has to find their own path . I know a lot of people who have broken the cycle. It’s never easy and at the bottom of it all we all must cultivate a true desire to be free from alcohol.

It’s something I’m working on daily but it’s very challenging when alcohol is everywhere in society. In Ireland 🇮🇪 our social lives revolve around drinking alcohol and drinking alcohol at home is the norm. I only know two people who are sober and I know a lot of people.
