So many powerful reads here, Julie. QUIT LIKE A WOMAN, WE ARE THE LUCKIEST, and THIS NAKED MIND played a monumental role in my decision to get and stay sober.

And huge celebration of YOUR book! I have no doubt your voice and story will inspire and help so many. ❤️

Thank you for the resource.

I’ll add two titles. First, “In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts,” by Dr. Gabor Maté. Second, “The Zen Way Of Recovery,” by Laura Burges.

I found both helpful in my continuing journey.

I would add "Never Enough" by Judith Grisel, a neuroscientist. It has helped me beyond measure.

Great post. Love the litmus scale! I actually loved The Biology of Desire - so much so I read his first one too (Memoirs of an Addicted Brain). I think I find books that explain the science behind addiction helpful because it helps me talk myself down from craving. Also love anything that explains the brainwashing - Alan Carr Easy Way to Stop Drinking and How to Kick the Drink… Easily by Jason Vale are two that helped me a lot. 💛

Allen Carr’s Easy Way to Quit Smoking was my gateway book.

I really enjoyed The Recovering, Sober Curious, and Quit Like a Woman.

I think I’ll have to check out This Naked Mind based on the comments.

Great list! More recently, I read How to Eat to Change How You Drink by Dr. Brooke Scheller. I enjoyed the actionable nutrition advice on how to modify your diet after quitting drinking. I also enjoyed Drinking Games by Sarah Levy!

I’ll have to read the others, but “This Naked Mind” was the game changer for me. Count me as one of those who was done with drinking even before finishing the book.

I am close to 16 months sober and I have never read any quit lit. Do you think it's too late to start?

Expand full comment

No way! Some of these I didn’t read until I was around that far along, and they still had so much to offer me.
